New to My Dutch Door?

What is My Dutch Door?
My Dutch Door is an online retailer of Fiberglass Dutch Doors. We are a family owned business located in Southern California. We only sell Plastpro brand doors – a world class door manufacturer based in Los Angeles, California.
What are Dutch Doors?
Dutch Doors, also known as split, double hung or half doors, are doors that are divided horizontally. They consist of two leaves (top and bottom halves of door) that operate independently.

Why Fiberglass Dutch Doors?

Why Fiberglass doors?
We firmly believe fiberglass is superior to wood and steel doors in every way. Fiberglass doors;
  • Are stronger and won’t fade, crack, splinter or rot like wood doors.
  • Will not dent, scratch or rust like steel
  • Wont expand or contract as much as wood or steel when the weather changes
  • Six time more energy efficient than wood, and
  • Require comparatively much less maintenance than either wood or steel doors
Are Dutch Doors Safe?
The type of horizontal cut in your Dutch Door determines if your door is secure. Most DIY methods follow the “Straight cut’ method, which is not very secure. All our Dutch Doors come with the inverse “L” shaped ‘Rabbet cut’ which is very strong and weather resistant. Similar to traditional doors, you will have the latch and deadbolt to fortify the door. You also have a Dutch bolt to lock the two leaves together. Additionally, Dutch Doors also have 4 hinges, compared to the typical 3 in traditional doors. The solidly constructed fiberglass molded surface provides strong protection and provides significant security over wood.
Are Fiberglass Dutch Doors Energy Efficient?
Fiberglass Doors are engineered to be extremely energy efficient. According to industry research Fiberglass Doors are up to six times more energy efficient than wood. All our Dutch Doors are shipped with weather resistant Q-Lon weatherstripping that’s affixed to the rabbetted portion of the lower-leaf. Pre-hung doors come with additional Q-Lon weatherstripping that’s placed around the perimeter of the frame. Combined with the threshold, the weatherstripping blocks air and moisture. It not only acts as a weather shield but increases energy efficiency.

Where to install

Where can I install Dutch Doors?
Dutch Doors are extremely versatile and can be used in many places in your home. Here are some places you can install a Dutch Door;
  • Front Entry Door
  • Kitchen or Laundry door
  • Side Garage door
  • Mud room, Storage room or any other door leading outside

Before You Begin

Decide if you need a Slab or Pre-hung Door?
Door slab: The two rectangular Dutch Door leaves without the frame is called the door slab. Typically a slab will not have a door frame or hardware. Handles, latch, deadbolt and hinges will not be typically prepped. Weatherstripping between leaves will be included. Stand-alone Dutch Door slabs will not fit in a standard wood door frame (see cautionary note and image below).
Pre-hung: This is an entry door system that includes the door, frame and threshold.
  • The Hinges will be prepped and installed.
  • The Dutch bolt may be prepped and installed (optional).
  • Handle and lockset holes will be prepped (handle and lock-set hardware not provided).
The pre-hung unit ensures an easy installation and snug fit. A pre-hung Fiberglass Dutch Door will easily replace an existing pre-hung wood door system (either Dutched or non-Dutched). The system will be in a Knock-Down form for easy shipping. Reassembly is required upon arrival. Door assembly by a licensed contractor is required for warranty purposes.
CAUTION: Do note that fiberglass doors are manufactured ¾” inch shorter than a comparable wood door. In fact, a “Dutched” fiberglass door will be 1” shorter still. An important point to remember if you are replacing a wood door with fiberglass. Check if the new slab hardware latch and deadbolt, will align with your existing jamb. A door frame that hangs a standard full slab door WILL NOT FIT Dutch door hinges, lock and deadbolt. Go for a slab door if you know what you are doing. If, unsure, order a pre-hung system.
Fiberglass Doors are 79-1/4” from the factory, whereas a comparable wood door will be 80”. When we have the fiberglass door 'Dutched’, it is shortened by another inch to accommodate the inverted 'L' shape of the Rabbet Cut (Dutch Cut).
What must I do before ordering a door?
  1. Decide if you want a slab only or complete pre-hung system
  2. Determine door handing (left/ right) and swing (In/ out)
  3. Measure rough opening to determine door size
  4. Measure jamb width
  5. Decide on the Dutch Door style, glass placement and type
  6. Decide on surface texture (smooth or textured)
  7. If textured, decide skin type (Mahogany or Oak)
  8. Decide on paint or stain color
  9. Choose threshold and hinge finish color
It is important you get the door size, handing and jamb width, right (steps 1 through 4). Download this handy checklist that'll show you how to easily measure your door, step-by-step. Once this is out of the way, you may choose from the various design options to customize and order your door.

Installation

How do I install the door?
Dutch Doors are complicated systems and we recommend they be installed by a licensed qualified professional door company to qualify for warranty. Pre-finished door systems will ship with touch-up paint for minor scrapes or scratches.
Do you have anyone local that can measure and install?
We do not have any local installers at present. You may research your local Yelp or Angie’s List directory and contract a reputed licensed professional installer.
